I believe that in order to be our best possible self, we must first ask God into our hearts and ask Him to do His will through us. When God created us at the beginning of creation, He made us perfect in His image. When we were born into this world, we forgot the time before this world where we knew God’s unconditional love for us.
God never stopped loving us; His unconditional love is eternal. God is always reaching out to us ready to help us remember His love. Through circumstance, we are presented the opportunity to remember.
For myself this occurred 48 years ago. I had just started a new job as an apprentice for a DOE contractor. Part of my job was to travel from a remote area to an area closer to Richland, WA where I worked. I favored an old pickup truck with a 350-engine block and a stick shift. One day as I was traveling the back roads in the desert on my way closer to town, I swerved off the gravel road and into a ditch.
The passenger side of the truck was smashed nearly to the seat, but I was unharmed and able to get out. I immediately knew in my heart that God had been in that truck somehow and had saved me from either death or injury. I thought about this a lot over the next few days as I was not disciplined and did not lose my job.
I was at a loss to understand why God would care for me when I had willfully turned my back on Him in the past. One night out camping with my family, I was alone by the campfire. I knew I was not worthy in my eyes to ask God for anything, but, with what little faith I had, I reached out to God and opened the door to my heart asking Him in and admitting that I couldn’t live a life worthy of Him on my own.
This is where my journey to be my best possible self began. Since that time I have been blessed more than I can express. I have also had trying times that ultimately made me a better person. I think to become our best possible selves, we need to start by asking God into our lives admitting that we aren’t capable of doing this on our own. If you already have a relationship with God, consider re-dedicating yourself to do God’s will that He may guide you on this path.
